Services also being held in Dallas, Houston and San Antonio for alumni and parents

Southwestern’s annual Candlelight services will be held on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 6 and 8 p.m. in the Lois Perkins Chapel. The services are free and open to the public.

The services, which are a Southwestern and Georgetown tradition, are adapted from “An Advent Service of Lessons and Carols” in The United Methodist Church Book of Worship, and are based on one developed in 1934 for the chapel of King’s College, Cambridge. The highlight of each service comes when the sanctuary is completely darkened and candles are lit throughout.

Liturgists for the services will be Southwestern University Chaplain Beverly Jones and David Olson, assistant professor and director of Communications Studies internships.

The prelude will be performed by a string quartet that includes students Samra Lazarus, Hunter Jurgens, Jeffery McKenzie and Will Danheim. Additional music will be provided by the SU Chorale under the direction of Kenny Sheppard, professor of music. The organist will be Pamela Rossman, chapel organist and instructor of music.

Southwestern’s dining service provider, Sodexo, will offer dinner to the public from 5-8 p.m. in the Commons at a cost of $9 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Following the 8 p.m. service, there will be a hot chocolate reception in the Bishops Lounge. Both the Commons and the Bishops Lounge are located on the first floor of the Red and Charline McCombs Campus Center.

Members of the Southwestern community who live outside Georgetown will be able to attend Candlelight services throughout the state during the month of December. The Houston Association of Southwestern University Alumni is planning a service on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 Main St. The San Antonio Association of Southwestern University Alumni is planning a service on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 5 p.m. at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, 825 East Basse Rd. And the Dallas Association of Southwestern University Alumni has planned a Candlelight Service that will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at University Park United Methodist Church.
