Academic Advisor - Upward Bound Program

Southwestern University has an immediate opening for an Academic Advisor of Upward Bound, a full-time, U.S. Department of Education grant-funded position designed to offer an environment for increased secondary and post-secondary graduation rates to disadvantaged, local high school students.

Primary Duties: Reporting to the Upward Bound Director; in-school visits to four target high schools; individual and group advising for academic, social, personal, and career decisions; data gathering and maintaining student individualized educational plans; developing and administering assessment tools for evaluating program components; planning and implementing academic, social, and cultural programs; and assistance with recruiting, selection, and interviewing of program participants.

Qualifications: Successful candidates will meet the following requirements:  possess a Bachelor’s degree; demonstrated experience working with, and knowledge of academic needs of, low-income, prospective first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds; demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines and to work with a variety of constituencies; excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to utilize a personal computer for word processing, electronic mail, internet research, and database management; and willingness to work during non-traditional hours.  Preferred qualifications include Master’s degree; experience with a TRIO program; verbal proficiency in Spanish. Preference given to qualified individuals who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project’s target population.
