Alumni Returning for Homecoming Nov. 2-4
More than 50 events planned for the weekend
Alumni will have a chance to meet some new faces on campus and say goodbye to some familiar faces as Southwestern holds its 2012 Homecoming and Reunion Weekend Nov. 2-4.
Alumni from 12 classes will be coming back to campus for reunions and more than 50 events are planned for alumni of all classes.
Highlights of the weekend include the annual Homecoming Parade, which begins at 11 a.m. Saturday on the Academic Mall, and the traditional Homecoming Picnic, where alumni will gather for local barbecue from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Alumni will have a chance to meet some of Southwestern’s new coaches at the picnic and also at the Saturday afternoon “T-shirt and Tennis Shoe” Reception.
Also on Saturday, alumni also will have the opportunity to attend some “Classes Without Quizzes” given by faculty members on topics such as “Water in the West” and “French Food Culture.”
The Association of Southwestern University Alumni will present its annual Alumni Awards Saturday evening.
Throughout the weekend, alumni will be recognizing President Jake B. Schrum and his wife, Jane, for their service to Southwestern. President Schrum has announced plans to retire in 2013. A special reception honoring the Schrums will be held Sunday morning from 10:15 – 11 a.m. in the Bishop’s Lounge.
Students will learn what was happening on campus from 1952 to 2012 as all the skits in the annual Saturday evening SING! competition will focus on the years of classes that are having reunions.
“The theme has been a wonderful way to bring together current students and alumni to create an exciting show,” said Katie Sokolyk, a senior who is one of the two co-cordinators of SING! this year.
Sokolyk said many of the participating groups have contacted alumni or looked at old yearbooks to get ideas for events, costumes and props.
“We’re really proud of all of the work that everyone has been putting in, and we can’t wait for everyone to see the creative acts that our students have come up with!” she said.
Students also will celebrate Homecoming and Reunion Weekend by participating in the second annual Homecoming Cup competition. Student organizations win points toward the Cup based on their performance in SING!, the Homecoming Parade and a dodge ball tournament.
Members of the community are invited to participate in the 12th Annual Jameson 5K Fun Run/Walk, which will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday. Kenda Evans ’92 has organized the run since 2001 in honor of her brother, who graduated from Southwestern in 1990 with a degree in chemistry. The race benefits students majoring in the sciences at Southwestern. To register for the event, go to www.Jameson5K.org. The race will start and finish on Southwestern Boulevard next to Joe S. Mundy Hall.
The complete schedule for Homecoming and Reunion Weekend is available here. Alumni can follow the @SouthwesternU Twitter account for updates throughout the weekend. Those on campus for the festivities are encouraged to tweet photos and updates of their own using the #SUHRW hash tag. Other hash tags that will be used over the weekend include #HonorSchrum, #BeSouthwestern and #JJ5K.
Photos and information also will be shared on the Association for Southwestern University Alumni Facebook page.
