Southwestern University invites applications for a Director of Student Activities position.  This position’s primary responsibilities include oversight, leadership, and management of a comprehensive Office of Student Activities, New Student and Transfer Orientation programs, and the McCombs Campus Center.  This is a full-time, exempt, Administrative Management position and reports to the Dean of Students.

Responsibilities include: lead, manage, and oversee the daily operations of a comprehensive Office of Student Activities; manage and oversee budgets of Office of Student Activities, student programming board, student organizations, orientation, and the student life enhancement plan; oversee campus-wide programming, assisting with leadership development, advising student organizations, general administrative tasks, and coordinating activities and services with other University entities; facilitate processes for over 100 student organizations.  Processes include risk management, registration, leadership development, recognition, policies and procedures, funding, discipline, and other general operations; provide lead staff support for the planning, implementation, and assessment of New Student Orientation and Transfer Student Orientation; serve as facility coordinator for the McCombs Campus Center; oversee facility management, building scheduling, and building usage; edit various office publications such as the department website, Organization Guide, Organization Handbook, newsletters, and Resource Guide; hire, supervise, train, and evaluate performance of professional staff members and student activities paraprofessionals; oversee campus campus-wide communication and publicity for activities, events, programs, and/or presentations; provide programming support for special projects as needed; collaborate and support various student life department staff and programs and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include: minimum of a Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education, counseling, or related field; five years experience in Student Life position in an institution of higher learning with three years supervisory or management experience; outstanding ability to relate to traditional college-aged students; general knowledge regarding student development theory and practices; excellent computer skills utilizing software such as Microsoft Word and Excel; proven supervisory and management skills; demonstrated leadership skills, including a strong work ethic; willingness to adhere to the University’s core values; possess excellent interaction and communication skills (verbal and written); have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community; demonstrated professional manner with all internal and external constituents; ability to be flexible, adjust to fluctuating priorities, and produce reliable work product; possess proven ability to perform well in stressful situations; ability and willingness to travel utilizing standard, commercial, and/or personal modes of transportation; understanding and commitment to a liberal arts education, including the ability to relate to a liberal arts faculty and the ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule.  Preferred qualifications: seven years experience in Student Life position in an institution of higher learning with five years supervisory or management experience; experience with budget management; experience within a residential college and/or residence life environment, preferably a small, liberal arts institution and experience with contract negotiation, risk reduction, and liability management.
