Southwestern University invites applications for the position of Associate Vice President for Finance.  This position is responsible for all business office operations, financial reporting, budget projections, financial analysis, and internal control functions and reports to the Vice President for Fiscal Affairs who is the University’s chief financial officer.  This position serves the role as chief budget and financial planning officer for the University and is responsible for a wide range of compliance requirements and reporting.  The ideal candidate will carry all of the management responsibilities and a significant list of “hands-on” duties and tasks as described below.

Responsibilities include: prepare annual operating budget and related reporting and monitoring activities for the institution; prepare annual financial statements, tax returns, and other outside reporting; supervise monthly financial statement preparation, review, and assessment;, possess excellent knowledge of FASB and higher education accounting principles; manage all borrowing, investing, and cash management functions and operations; manage bond issues; serve as main contact with financial advisors and rating agencies; work directly with the University’s banks and investment/endowment managers; manage various financial analysis projects, and develop cash flow projections and business models and related business plans for University programs, projects, and other activities; develop and monitor internal control systems for the University; prepare metrics, such as the composite financial index (CFI); evaluate and compare University operations to other peer institutions using standardized ratios and benchmarks; complete annual NACUBO, IPEDS, and related types of surveys; develop sound business policies and procedures; manage purchasing and procurement of goods and services for the campus community;  manage the Business Office, Postal Services, and Pirate Card Office staff; make presentations and provide assistance to faculty, staff, Senior Staff, and Board of Trustees; serve as primary liaison to the Audit Committee of the Board of Trustees;  provide support to the Fiscal Affairs and Investment Committees; perform duties of the Vice President for Fiscal Affairs-CFO in his/her absence; serve on various University committees as required; perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications include: a Bachelors of Business Administration with seven years of experience in progressively more responsible public accounting or advanced accounting role including five years in management-level positions; understanding of complex accounting, budgeting, and internal control requirements in a higher education environment; demonstrated understanding of higher education and non-profit tax law, regulations, and compliance; excellent computer skills related to spreadsheets, word processing, presentations (charts, graphs, powerpoint), data management, and related enterprise resource planning applications; possess and exercise a management style and customer service orientation which is consistent with the mission and culture of the University; proven supervisory, management, and leadership skills, including team building, systems implementation, emergency planning and management; a strong work ethic and commitment to meeting deadlines; willingness to adhere to the University’s core values; possess excellent interaction and communication skills (verbal and written); have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community; demonstrated professional manner with all internal and external University constituents; ability to be flexible, adjust to changing and fluctuating priorities, and produce reliable work product; proven ability to handle multiple priorities and perform well in stressful situations; understanding and commitment to a liberal arts education, including the ability to relate to a liberal arts faculty.  Preferred qualifications: a Masters in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related field; ten years of experience in progressively more responsible public accounting or advanced accounting role; experience with Datatel ERP systems; and ten years in management-level positions.  Required qualifications:  a Bachelors degree and current Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license.
