Right in our backyard is a unique space with a lot of potential for education and parenting, cultural and family events, elderly and adult events, politics, community or anything else.

Want to get involved in a local project? The Getsemani Community Center is a location in need of a facelift. Individuals from around the community looking to make the center a community space that will be able to host a variety of programs and events.

There’s a lot of potential for student/faculty projects and volunteerism for individuals and groups to get involved in. Some major suggestions for the space include:

  • Education and parenting: getting parents involved in education, basic computer skills for parents, tutoring time for kids, college entry assistance, dinner for graduating students, parenting (English and Spanish), family movie nights, kids-only movie nights (especially for working moms), business startup workshops
  • Cultural and family events: Cinco de Mayo celebration, cultural arts and crafts, ballet folklorico lessons, neighborhood talent/musicians
  • Elderly and adult events: club for seniors, Senior Salsa afternoons, bingo, exercise (i.e. Zumba, low impact)
  • Politics and community: Voter responsibilities, general election process, voter registration, citizenship classes, immigration issues, community service activities

The center is located at the corner of 19th and Church St, just a mile or so down the road from Southwestern. The GCC office is located at 414 E. 19th Street, TX 78626.
