Head Football Coach

Southwestern University recently announced the addition of football as a varsity sport beginning in the 2013-2014 academic year and is now seeking candidates for the Head Football Coach position to build this new program.  The projected start date is February, 2012.  This is a 12-month position with benefits and the salary is commensurate with experience.

Primary duties initially include the overall development of the football program, hiring of offensive and defensive coordinators, and strategizing the recruitment of qualified student athletes.  Regular/on-going primary duties include:  practice and game preparation; planning and executing daily workouts; game coaching; scouting of opponents; team travel; attending to player issues, on-going recruitment of qualified student-athletes; administrative duties, including budget maintenance, purchasing and monitoring equipment, making travel arrangements and filing travel expense reports; maintaining correspondence, public relations and promotion of the football program; and, teaching in the FRA and / or Exercise and Sports Studies programs.  Additional duties include serving on university committees, serving as a game day administrator as assigned, involvement in an Athletic Department summer camp, assisting with Student Life and Athletic Department functions (e.g. search committees, department committees, etc.) and performing other duties as assigned.  In consultation with the Director of Athletics, this position is responsible for delegating work, providing input for performance appraisals, handling discipline issues and hiring/promoting/terminating staff.

Position requirements include a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred); evidence of successful coaching experience (head coach; defensive or offensive coordinator preferred) at a highly competitive level; knowledge and experience with NCAA Division III philosophy, competition and legislation; understanding and commitment to a liberal arts education, including the ability to relate to a liberal arts faculty and willingness to adhere to the University’s core values; strong communication skills for recruitment of qualified student athletes, teaching, and departmental/university relations; excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to complete and maintain required university health and safety courses and certifications; ability to attend work consistently and maintain a regular work schedule; and, ability to obtain and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License and ability to pass a University Van Driver’s Course.  Background or training in Kinesiology or related field strongly preferred.
