ACADEMIC AFFAIRS COUNCIL Meeting of March 26, 2010 Present: P. Hopkins, Cowley, Stones, Smith, Early, Pierce, Ring, Kennedy, Murphy, Sheller, Neville, Visser Guests: McCann, Bonner The meeting was called to order by the chair at 1:08 p.m. The minutes were approved as submitted. Following discussion, proposed Catalog changes for the following departments/programs/areas were approved: Chemistry and Biochemistry Classics English Exercise and Sports Studies Kinesiology Math and Computer Science Modern Languages and Literatures – Chinese/French/German Philosophy Psychology Religion Sociology and Anthropology Early will contact the Physics faculty to explore the proposed 50-credit major and report back to the Council. Additionally, Early will confer with the Psychology faculty about the requirement of a C on all prerequisites (versus a C-) as well as the rationale behind their 3-credit courses. The Council also requested that the 2010-11 AAC agenda include a discussion about what constitutes a Writing Attentive course. Stones presented a proposed procedure for handling overload requests in light of the new curriculum. The procedure was affirmed with changes as follows: When students have proven their ability to do above-average work, they may carry more than a normal load. Twenty semester credits may be taken if a 3.5 is achieved on a minimum of 15 credits taken the preceding semester. Students may not pre-register for an overload. Students of exceptional ability may be given permission to take 20 or more credits. Students wishing to add a larger than normal academic load must receive advisor and Registrar approval in advance. There is an additional charge per hour for all hours above 19. Stones and Bonner reported that they are continuing to work on making changes to the SU transcript that provide clarification to other institutions about the new curriculum and course credits. The new course prefix (09) was approved for the Animal Behavior program as were the new course numbers and cross-listings.
