A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole is a highly awarded novel which captures all the intricacies, misgivings, and comicality involved in the process of becoming an adult. This King Creativity project therefore aims to transfer these aspects of the novel onto the stage, so that the students of Southwestern can identify through its characters their own overwhelming sentiments towards this - their current and crucial stage of life. At the center of A Confederacy of Dunces is the dark cloud which is looming in all of our futures - the inevitability that we will soon be forced to leave our parents’ houses and the college campus, and fend for ourselves in a cruel and unfamiliar world (i.e. find jobs). Through exploring and interlinking the separate mediums of literature and drama, this project hopes to convey the narrative of this classic story, and leave its audience with a message of comfort and support… that perhaps growing up isn’t so bad after all.
