Important Message from the Title IX Compliance Committee

Notice From the Title IX Compliance Committee
_______________________________________________________________________

Dear students, faculty, and staff of Southwestern University,

Yesterday, September 7, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos announced that the Department of Education intends to replace Title IX guidance issued in 2011, commonly referred to as the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter. Title IX remains in effect, and the guidance offered in the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter will still be in effect until the process has been completed.

Please be assured that while the University will monitor any changes to regulations in order to remain in compliance with federal law, we are proud of the work we have done to support survivors and educate the community about sexual violence, and confident that our policies and procedures are fair to all parties. The national landscape may shift, but we remain steadfast in our comprehensive efforts – educational, investigative, and supportive of survivors – and anticipate no reduction in those efforts.

If you have experienced or think you may have experienced an incident of sexual misconduct, help is available and you have options. You may speak confidentially with a counselor or nurse in the Counseling and Health Center (512-863-1252) or with the University Chaplain (512-863-1056). You may also file a report with SUPD (512-863-1944) or the Dean of Students(512-863-1624). More comprehensive information, including frequently asked questions and contact information for local advocates, is available online in our publication, “Resources and Reporting Options for Sexual Misconduct or Sexual Assault.”

Thank you for your part in making Southwestern a community in which we prioritize safety and demonstrate respect for the worth and dignity of all persons.
