Communication Studies major Kayleigh Hanna (’18) and fellow SU colleagues Arden Lange and Jackie Bouton constructed a new trail for Hopeful Hearts Equine Therapy Sunday January 22. Hopeful Hearts, a not for profit providing individuals with disabilities therapeutic horseback riding and other activities for physical, emotional, social, and cognitive well-being offers service learning projects on a weekly basis. Sunday was Hanna’s first time volunteering with Hopeful Hearts, but she was eager to get a couple of her friends together to clear the trail. She spent the afternoon cutting down small trees, clearing cedar, putting the collected wood in a chipper, and then raking the mulch into a trail. The new trail will serve rescue horses in addition to children, teenagers, and adults with mental and physical disabilities. Hanna has also worked with the Georgetown County Animal Shelter and is excited to keep volunteering with Hopeful Hearts.
