It is with deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of a Southwestern legend and one of our University’s most revered professors, Dr. William B. Jones. A passionate teacher, tireless Southwestern advocate, and author of To Survive and Excel: The Story of Southwestern University, 1840-2000, Dr. Jones will be missed immensely.

During his 35-year tenure at Southwestern, Dr. Jones left an impactful legacy. He began his storied career with SU in 1965 as the Lucy King Brown Professor of History. In 2000, he retired as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the University, as well as Professor Emeritus of History. At various times, Jones served as Chair of the History Department, Director of the International Studies Program, Director of Institutional Research, Executive Vice President, Provost, and Interim President during the 1999-2000 academic year. His honors include the Outstanding Professor Award, bestowed by the Southwestern University Students’ Association, and the Mr. Homecoming Award, by the alumni in 1976. After Dr. Jones retired, he was given the title of University Historian.

In a Southwestern article celebrating and reflecting on his retirement, Dr. Jones said, “Southwestern has given my life a definition.” It is clear that he, too, has given Southwestern definition, and will be forever honored and fondly remembered.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 16 at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 410 East University Avenue, Georgetown. In the meantime, please join me in keeping the Jones family in your thoughts.

With a heavy heart,

Edward B. Burger
President and Professor
