Southwestern University will hold its annual Research and Creative Works Symposium: From Every Voice on Tuesday, April 14, 2015. The Symposium is a celebration of the work of Southwestern students, faculty and staff, and will include feature more than 150 poster presentations, art exhibits, a Chorale performance, faculty panel discussions, and presentations of faculty and student research.

The Symposium provides members of the Southwestern community an opportunity to present research and creative work in a professional atmosphere and has become one of Southwestern’s greatest legacies. Its grand display of various interests, expertise, and in- and out-of-classroom experiences of Southwestern students, faculty and staff members encapsulates the spirit of a liberal arts education.

A panel discussion titled “The Linguistic Landscapes of Texas” will kick off the Symposium at 9 a.m. in the McCombs Center Ballrooms, followed by an introduction and welcoming remarks by President Edward Burger at 10:45 a.m. on the Academic Mall. Classes are cancelled for the day to allow members of the campus community an opportunity to participate, either as a presenter or observer.

Senior Emma McDaniel is the 2015 Student Coordinator of the event, which is open to any research topics and fine arts performances that students, faculty or staff wish to present. Student projects explore topics ranging from gender, videogames and fear, to an interpretation of the “Legend of Zelda” through dance. Some students will also present on topics related to the Georgetown community; for example, the partnership between Southwestern and The Caring Place.

Many projects presented are senior capstone projects, which are required for graduation, and some projects received support from the King Creativity Fund, which provides students with grants of up to $2,000 for “innovative and visionary projects.”

The event is free and open to the public. A complete schedule can be found on the symposium website
