SU’s CS Club and local Upsilon Pi Epsilon Chapter have engaged in several social and educational events this semester:

  • The CS department began the semester with cupcakes and ice cream to celebrate Anita Borg’s birthday during the first week of the Spring semester. Anita Borg was the founder of the Grace Hopper celebration for women in computing, and the creator of the popular Syster’s mailing list. She was a catalyst of social change in the movement for women in technology.
  • The CS department had its annual post-holiday party and gift exchange at the home of Professor Emeritus Barbara Owens in January 2015. It was well-attended by current students and faculty, retired faculty, alumni, and President Burger. The White Elephant Gift Exchange was as amusing as ever, including the one gift that has been re-gifted for at least six consecutive years. Students and alums who want to know what that gift is are encouraged to attend next year’s party.
  • In conjunction with Career Services, the CS department welcomed six alumni back to campus for a panel on Careers in Computer Science on February 19, 2015. The panelists were Ryan Saurage (Media Sourcery), Charles Ramsay (Sotera Defense), Connie Krueger (Spiceworks), Darren Allen (CA Technologies), Taylor Elkins (Union Pacific) and Karlie Verkest De Young (BlackLocus). Forty current students, along with faculty and staff advisers of the CS club and UPE chapter, benefited from hearing about the experiences of these SU alums from the 80s through the present decade.
