About this project:

During The BIG Event on Saturday, March 28, 2015, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of Southwestern University will come together to volunteer in collaboration with numerous agencies in Georgetown, TX. Services volunteered raise awareness about various social, political and economic issues in the community and include gardening, small improvement projects, and large labor projects. Funds raised could help supply food for our volunteers throughout the day, T-shirts (which help identify volunteers at worksites), and any other operational support to make this BIG day a success. In March 2014, we provided the community with over 300 volunteers who gave 1000+ hours of service to Georgetown. This year, we would like to offer more diverse services to the community and increase the number of volunteers who participate.

“I love how it brings the whole campus together for one day to volunteer in their community. It’s really important because it lets students know about opportunities around them and it lets them know about ways they can get involved. Once a student goes to a worksite, it might just be for a day, but sometimes they’ll get to talk to people who work or regularly volunteer at the organization and become invested in their mission. I’ve heard stories from volunteers who continued to go back to the worksite they volunteered with at The BIG Event. That’s part of our goal – to create sustainable partnerships between Southwestern students and the Georgetown community.”
