Jay Winter, the Charles J. Stille Professor of History at Yale University, will give a lecture at Southwestern University on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 4 p.m. in Olin 110. The title of Winter’s lecture is “100 Years On: Remembering the Great War, 1914-18.”

Winter is the author of more than a dozen books on World War I and its impact on the 20th and early 21st centuries. Several of his recent works, including Sites of Memory, Sites of War: The Great War in European Cultural HistoryThe Experience of World War I1914-1918: The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century; and Remembering War: The Great War between History and Memory in the 20th Century, are at the forefront of scholarship in the field.

Winter was also co-producer, co-writer and chief historian for the PBS series, “The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century,” which won the Emmy, Peabody and Producers Guild of America Awards for best TV documentary in 1997.

“Professor Winter continues to shape how we view and remember World War I 100  years later, all of which makes him the ideal guest for our annual History Colloquium,” said Jessica Hower, assistant professor of history. “Professor Winter has graciously squeezed us into his very packed end-of-the-year schedule and I could not be more honored nor more thrilled to have him here.”  

The lecture is part of the annual History Colloquium series and is co-sponsored by the following departments and programs: Communication Studies; English; Art History; Chinese, French and German; International Studies; The Global Citizens Fund; and the Situating Place Paideia Cluster.
