Join us for an artist reception with both Murray and Chen as we celebrate the presentation of their work.
According to Southwestern senior art student Kaitlin Murray, “body shaming and the fight for body perfection is a religion in our society.” In her mixed media exhibition The Altar of Skin, Murray “utilizes multiple mediums including metal, plaster, and latex rubber to present forms of the ‘perfect’ human body at life-size. This scale allows viewers to make direct psychological and physical comparisons with their own bodies.” The artist adds, “My work challenges the tenuous relationship between victims of body shaming and those who victimize them.”
Dwelling between two-dimensional and three-dimensional forms, Huakai Chen’s exhibition Resonance of the Future develops new interpretations of traditional forms of art and explores the collective awareness of historic and cultural patterns in contemporary China. Chen’s work blends European, American, and Chinese modes of expression in painting and sculpture to engage with the social and religious issues common to east/west cultures.
The opening reception will take place on March 22nd from 5:00-6:30pm. The exhibition will remain up through March 28th. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.
