Southwestern University’s Sarofim School of Fine Arts’ Theatre Department is excited to present “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” with a Book by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart and Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The musical was originally produced on Broadway by Harold S. Prince.

Three houses stand side by side in ancient Rome. The first house belongs to Senex, a Roman senator, along with his family and his slaves. The second house belongs to Marcus Lycus, a purveyor of courtesans. The last house belongs to Erronius, an old man who is abroad searching for his long lost children. Matters become complicated when the son of Senex, Hero, falls in love with a courtesan of Lycus, Philia, who is betrothed to the adventurous warrior Miles. Pseudolus, the slave of Hero, offers to join the lovers together in exchange for his sought after freedom from Senex’s house. As the plan is set and the action is in motion, everything gets turned upside down and the lovers begin to be caught in their web of lives. Get ready for a “Comedy Tonight” full of mistaken identities, surprise homecomings and unexpected outcomes as the lovers plan spirals out of control in this classic piece of musical theatre. With music and lyrics from Broadway veteran composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim and a book from award-winners Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum will offer a night of high comedy and entertainment that will have you laughing out of your seat. Don’t miss out on this ancient comedy!

“In its own lunatic way, it’s both wise and rigorously disciplined. Easy sentimentality is nowhere to be here; in its place: the kind of organized chaos that leads to sheer, extremely contagious high spirits.” –The New York Times
