Careers in Writing: Legal Writing/Creative Writing

The Careers in Writing series features alumni and other professionals with experience in a wide variety of roles featuring writing, including: creative writing, grant writing, technical writing, corporate communications, public affairs, legal writing, publishing and more. This session features legal writing professor and creative writer Sean Petrie.

Sean Petrie is legal writing faculty member at The David J. Beck Center for Legal Research, Writing, and Appellate Advocacy at The University of Texas at Austin, where he also earned his BA in Plan II. He went on to earn his JD at Stanford and practiced at both large and small law firms and worked for a federal judge.  More recently, he pursued his passion to earn an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. On the fiction side, he’s represented by the Folio, Jr. literary agency and actively involved with the Austin Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators, as well as a spontaneous poetry group called Typewriter Rodeo.
