"I stand for Texas in the U.S. Senate" was Senator Tower's campaign motto in 1978, and throughout his career he worked energetically to bring federal projects to Texas. The files contain correspondence, clippings, photographs, reports, maps, staff notes and memoranda, bills, telegrams and other materials.
The majority
of the materials found among the subseries concern Texas water projects,
and they are often related to water conservation, flood control or navigation.
The Columbus Bend Reservoir, a proposal for a series of reservoirs and
locks on the Trinity River, the protection of the Edwards Aquifer, the
Amistad Hydroelectric Power Plant, and the Matagorda Ship Channel are among
the projects. Other subjects concern social issues, such as Community Action
projects and funding for hospitals and national parks in Texas, including
Padre Island National Seashore, Big Bend, Sam Houston and Sabine national
parks. Additional project files are found in the State Office series.
