This page is intended to introduce a few select resources,
both on the Web and in the Smith Library Center print
collection, that are particularly useful for the
study of Music.
INDEXES
Academic
Search Complete
A multi-disciplinary, full text database designed specifically
for academic institutions that includes full text for
over 2,940 scholarly publications abstracts and indexing
for nearly 3,930 scholarly journals with many dating
back to 1984. Full-page images, as well as color embedded
images are included.
Arts & Humanities
Search
Citations for over 1,300 of the world's leading arts
and humanities journals, as well as selected articles
from social science and science journals. Covers
1980 to the present. Updated weekly.
ARTstor
The ARTstor image database is a searchable collection of downloadable
high quality digital images for education and scholarship.
The database documents artistic and historical traditions
across many time periods and cultures. ARTstor is designed
for researchers, teachers and students. Users can download
individual images or use the ARTstor Online Image Viewer to
build a presentation using ARTstor images, arrange and caption
the images, and deliver the presentation in the classroom.
International
Index to the Performing Arts (IIPA)
IIPA draws its content from more than 210 scholarly
and popular performing arts periodicals, and also
indexes a variety of documents such as biographical
profiles, conference papers, obituaries, interviews,
discographies, reviews and events. The database covers
a broad spectrum of the arts and entertainment industry,
including dance, film, television, drama, theater,
stagecraft, musical theater, broadcast arts, circus
performance, comedy, storytelling, opera, pantomime,
puppetry, magic and more. Includes abstracts. Citations
from 1864-present.
JSTOR
Full text online for 32 scholarly journal articles
in music as well as journals in other disciplines.
Music journal titles include Ethnomusicology, Musical
Times, Journal of Music Theory, and
more.
The Music Index
REFERENCE, 1st Floor, Index Tables
A print index useful for locating articles in the
music literature. The library holds the index from
1971 to 2001.
Project
MUSE
Provides full image journal articles in the humanities
and social sciences. Music journals include Women
in Music, Asian Music, Computer Music
Journal, and more.
RILM
Abstracts of Music Literature
Published by Repertoire International de Litterature
Musicale, New York, contains records in many languages;
entries include original-language titles, title translations
in English, full bibliographic information, and abstracts
in English, as well as author, journal, and in-depth
subject indexes. The majority of citations include
abstracts. Over 500 scholarly journals are represented.
Articles, books, bibliographies, catalogues, conference
proceedings, discographies, dissertations, ethnographic
recordings, Festschriften, films, iconographies,
and videos are all covered by RILM. Concert reviews,
recording notes, and pedagogical manuals are indexed
if they are of scholarly interest. Over 20,000 new
records are added to the database each year. 1969-present.
Updated monthly.

African American Song
Searchable resource for African American music. Licensed digital
recordings that users can listen to over the Internet including
over 50,000 tracks of jazz, blues, gospel, and other forms.

Searchable classical music resource. Licensed digital recordings
that users can listen to over the Internet from 40 music labels.

Music Online
Comprises the full text of The
New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians and The
New Grove Dictionary of Opera. Search the full
text of articles and locate related materials.
Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries
Searchable world music resource. Licensed digital recordings that users can listen to over the Internet; more than 35,000 individual tracks of music, spoken word, and natural and human-made sounds. Includes American folk, American Indian, world traditions, children's, etc. Includes digital archives of Folkways Records as well as International Library of African Music, Indian music from the Archive Research Centre for Ethnomusicology. Available on campus only. (See also Classical Music Library and African American Song for other digital recordings.)

catalog. Do a Reference Materials search using
keywords to describe your topic. You can also check
the library's Web pages for subject guides for specific
topics to find other suggested sources.

National Association
of Schools of Music
NASM, founded in 1924, is an organization of schools, conservatories,
colleges and universities. It has approximately 600 accredited
institutional members. It establishes national standards for
undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials. Southwestern
University's Music Department is accredited by the NASM.
OPERA America
A membership organization which "serves and strengthens the
world of opera by providing a variety of informational, technical,
and administrative resources to the greater opera community."
The A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library Center no longer holds a library
membership with OPERA America, so some features of the website
may not be accessible.
Society for
Music Theory
Includes conference and other event information, links to regional
societies, the SMT Newsletter, full text articles in Music
Theory Online, and links to music theory resources.
