This page is intended to introduce a few select resources,
both on the Web and in the Smith Library Center print
collection, that are particularly useful for the
study of French, German and Chinese languages, literatures,
and cultures.

INDEXES
NOTE: Students researching in languages
other than English should allow enough
time (usually about 10 working days)
for interlibrary
loan of any foreign language articles
from journals to which the library
does not
subscribe.

This is a sample of online indexes
the library offers with citations from
some number of foreign language publications
included. Most of the online indexes
listed below are predominantly English-language,
but
they all include some materials in other languages,
with some
mechanism for limiting searches by language.
ArtAbstracts
Search (in English, Spanish, or French) for citations
to articles in German, French, Spanish, and Italian.
An index to art periodicals that includes foreign
language titles. Choose "Advanced" searching, and
limit language to "Non-English" in the pull-down
menu provided.
Arts & Humanities
Search
Search (in English, Spanish, or French) for citations
to articles in French, German, or Spanish.
Citations for arts and humanities journals. Choose "Advanced" searching,
and limit language to "Non-English" in the pull-down

ATLA
Religion Database with ATLASerials
Database created by the American Theological Library
Association, includes more than one million bibliographic
records covering such topics as biblical studies,
world religions, church history, and religious perspectives
on social issues.
ClasePeriodica
This is a combined index of Latin American journals
in the sciences and humanities: CLASE indexes documents
published in Latin American journals specializing
in the social sciences and humanities; PERIODICA
covers journals specializing in science and technology.
Articles are in Spanish, Portuguese, French, and
English.
Humanities
Abstracts
Search (in English, Spanish, or French) for articles
in French, German,
Spanish, and other languages.
Periodicals in archaeology, art, classics, film,
folklore, journalism, linguistics, music, the performing
arts, philosophy, religion, world history, and world
literature. Choose "Advanced" searching, and limit
language to "Non-English" in the pull-dowm menu provided.
International
Index to the Performing Arts (IIPA)
Search for articles in French, Spanish, German, Italian,
and Catalan.
Index to periodical articles in dance, film, drama/theater,
stagecraft, broadcast arts, more. From first search
screen, limit by preferred
language.
JSTOR
Full text for scholarly journals in English, Spanish,
French, German. More than 50 language and literature
journals as well as journals in other disciplines
that include non-English articles. Search in desired
language.
MLA
International Bibliography
Search for books and articles in French, Spanish,
German, and other
languages.
Indexes the world's research literature in language,
linguistics, and literature. Access to scholarly
research in journals and series, monographs, working
papers, proceedings, bibliographies, and other formats.
The
Philosopher's Index
Search for citations to articles in French, German,
Spanish or Italian.
The Philosopher's Index provides indexing and abstracts
from books and journals of philosophy and related
fields, beginning in 1940. It covers the areas of
ethics, aesthetics, social philosophy, political
philosophy, epistemology, and metaphysics logic as
well as material on the philosophy of law, religion,
science, history,
education, and language.
Women's
Studies International
Search for materials in French, German, or Spanish.
Includes citations from women's studies-related databases,
some dating back as far as 1972. From the first screen,
read the brief instructions, then select Women's
Studies International. To locate items in languages
other than English, you must choose the Advanced
Search option.
WorldCat
Search (in French, Spanish, or English) for titles
in Chinese, French, German, Latin, or Spanish along
with more than 25 others.
Books and other materials in libraries worldwide.
To search for books in languages other than English,
choose "Advanced" searching, then limit to the preferred
language in the pull-down menu provided.

Gale Literary
Index
For author research, begin with this index. You can
search by author's name, title of a work, or author's
nationality. Your results list will give you citations
to works in English the library may own. Please check
your citations in the library catalog.
Literature
Resource Center
Biographical, bibliographical, and contextual information
in English on authors and their works, including
authors of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, history,
and journalism. Access to many of Gale's literary
sources, including; Contemporary Authors, Dictionary
of Literary Biography, and Contemporary Literary
Criticism Select.
