Library Instruction: General Guidelines
Librarians at the A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library Center have a long
tradition of working with faculty to provide library instruction
to students. Librarians assist faculty and students in several ways.
1.) Individual instruction is available to students,
faculty and staff members at the general Reference Desk. Students
can make appointments with librarians to receive more in-depth assistance
with their major projects. Also, we offer individual instruction
for you, like providing assistance on difficult, specialized databases.
2.) We offer in-class instruction, particularly
course-integrated instruction in support of a specific assignment
in order to introduce the library and some key resources and research
concepts to students.
Deciding when instruction is needed
Sometime a classroom presentation is not necessary. You may want
a printed library guide or web page to support the topic. For instance,
librarians will develop a course-related web page or printed guide
that does not require our presence but just a list of resources
to aid students in these courses.
Contacting a librarian
Joan Parks,
Head, Reference Services, is the main contact person if you have
any questions regarding the instructional program. However,
each of the librarians is assigned a number of academic departments.
Each librarian serves as a contact person in the library when you
have suggestions, questions or concerns regarding collection development,
online database searching, formal and informal library instruction,
and other related activities. See
the list of library liaisons.
We encourage the faculty member to be there
We encourage you to be present during the session. Your presence
reinforces the importance of the library session. You are also needed
to clarify the assignment and to answer questions from students.
Information You Should Provide
Please provide the assignment in writing which the library instruction
session is designed to support.
Scheduling of the library instruction session
Please contact us at least two weeks prior to your
class date. Class presentations may be held in the electronic classrooms
located on the second floor of the library, at the sixteen workstations
on the first floor in the Reference Area, or in electronic classrooms
throughout the campus.
Make sure the resources are available in the library
Make sure the assignment is appropriate to the resources available
in the A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library Center. Please check the library’s
Voyager Catalog to make
sure we have the resources available on the topic.
