This page is intended to introduce a few select resources, both on the Web and in the Smith Library Center print collection, that are particularly useful for the study of law.


INDEXES

Index to Legal Periodicals and Books
A database of legal literature including law reviews, legal news, periodicals and selected books. Although this source does not include the full-text of most articles, LexisNexis Academic can be used to obtain copies of the referenced article.

Legal Collection (Ebscohost)
The EBSCOhost Legal Collection covers more than 250 scholarly peer-reviewed journals in law and related fields. It includes research-oriented journals from the social sciences and traditional law review journals. Topics include criminal justice, labor and human resources law, environmental law, and more. Includes information from 1965 to the present.PDF, or scanned-in-color. Full text information in this database dates as far back as 1965.

LexisNexis Academic (Legal Research)
LEXIS/NEXIS Academic is an online service composed of legal, general and international news, reference, and business sources. Statutes, regulations and cases, can be accessed using LexisNexis. The service is particularly useful to retrieve United States Court cases. Additionally, the service includes full-text law review and legal news articles.


REFERENCE WORKS

To find printed reference material relevant to your topic start with the library's Voyager catalog. Do a Reference Materials search using keywords to describe your topic. You can also check the library's Web pages for other subject guides for specific topics to find other suggested sources.

Oxford Reference Online: Law
The Oxford Companion to American Law, A Dictionary of Law, The Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States, and the Oxford Guide to United States Supreme Court Decisions.

West's Encyclopedia of American Law
REFERENCE, 1st floor 348.73 W52
Contains over 4,000 entries devoted to terms, concepts, events, movements, cases, and persons significant to U.S. law.

United States Code Congressional and Administrative News

Selectively reprints legislative committee reports for enacted legislation. Reports may be edited. Contains references to other reports and dates of debate.



GOVERNMENT SOURCES (Federal Resources)

CQ Weekly
A weekly source for information on Capitol Hill, legislative news, and analysis. CQ Weekly on the Web includes access to the full-text of all articles published since August, 1983.

FirstGov.gov
A gateway to online federal government information, and it includes links to other government websites.

GPO Access
Is the website for the United States government publications.

THOMAS
Maintained by the Library of Congress, the service includes legislative information. Bill texts, bill summaries, public laws, roll call votes, committee reports, the Congressional Record and other legislative information


WEB LINKS

AllLaw
A searchable and comprehensive legal resources directory, including legal journals.

FindLaw
FindLaw has two portals, one for the legal professionals and another one for the public. The legal portal provides access to primary source materials, including federal and state statutes, regulations and court cases, as well as a legal news library. The public portal is organized topically (Divorce and Family Law, Employee Rights, etc.). For each topic, articles with general information is provided.

Hieros Gamos
The site provides links to United States law, international law, legal and bar associations, law schools and graduate schools.

Jurist Legal News and Research
An online newspaper published by the University of Pittsburg School of Law.

Legal Information Institute (LII)
Maintained by the Cornell Law School. LII includes federal and state full-text primary source materials, including constitutions, statutes, regulations, United States Supreme Court opinions, United States Court of Appeals opinions, and state court opinions. Covers uniform codes, such as the Uniform Commerical Code and Uniform Probate Code.

Nolo
Nolo publishes legal guides for non-practitioners.

Nolo.com Glossary
A useful legal dictionary that can be browsed by topic or searched for specific words.

Texas Legislative Council: Internet Resources
The staff of the Legislative Council creates and maintains a number of web sites to provide information to the Texas Legislature, including the Texas statutes, Texas legislation, Texas constitution, Texas redistricting information, Texas events, etc.

WashLaw
Maintained by the Washburn School of Law Library. Find hundreds of links to law resources, law libraries, law schools, law library catalogs, legal research, Texas state law and decisions, and more.


PERIODICALS

To find citations or online full-text for articles in periodicals on your topic, try the resources listed above under Indexes.

To find holdings and location information for specific periodicals titles (both print and online), search the Voyager catalog.
