The original women's building, constructed in 1880, had no boarding facilities. Both women's
and Preparatory Department classes met in this building about four blocks west of the main college building.  When the young ladies' school was opened, the statement was made, "It is no proposal to experiment in the novelty of co-education of the sexes." Therefore, the same faculty taught the same collegiate program to both men and women in different classroom buildings.

The Southwestern University baseball team played the University of Texas April 21, 1884 in what is believed to be the first inter-collegiate baseball game played in Texas. This photo was taken around 1884.
