The Ladies' Annex opened in 1889 as a self-contained boarding and classroom facility. It contained, in addition to sleeping quarters, an art studio, a gymnasium, meeting rooms for the the three sororities, and the Alethean and Clio Literary Societies.  This photograph was taken prior to 1905 when a wing was added on the east, giving the building an "H" design.

Southwestern's original chapel building, located on the soutwest corner of the first campus, was converted to a reading room and library in 1895. By 1897 the library contained approximately 2800 volumes.  The First Methodist Church building, in the background, was completed in 1902.

The cornerstone for the Southwestern University Administration Building (now known as the Roy and Lillie Cullen Building) was laid September 8, 1898. By the end of the 1898-1899 school year, a lack of funds brought construction to a halt after the first floor was finished. Construction was resumed in April 1900 and the building was opened for use at the beginning of the 1900-1901 school year. The cornerstone ceremony photograph, above, was found in the M. B. Lockett Autobiography.

The cornerstone for the medical and pharmaceutical building was laid in April 1905 in a ceremony attended by over 300 students from the University and Preparatory Departments.

Giddings Hall, (shown above) was the first men's dormitory and also the first building built entirely from the donated funds of patron Mrs. Giddings. After it was demolished, Dr. Godbey salvaged its materials to build the Godbey Gymnasium (below) in 1918.The wooden gym burned in 1921 and was replaced by a building made of corrugated iron.  The new building was used as the university gym until West Gym was built in 1941.
