Finding Film Reviews

This page is intended to introduce a few select resources, both on the Web and in the Smith Library Center print collection, that are particularly useful for locating film reviews. In order to find a film review, you need to know the film title; it is helpful to know the film release date as well. (To find additional film reviews and bibliographies, use the Voyager catalog's subject search. Type in: motion pictures--reviews.)


INDEXES


Academic Search Complete
A multi-disciplinary, full text database designed specifically for academic institutions that includes full text for over 2,940 scholarly publications abstracts and indexing for nearly 3,930 scholarly journals with many dating back to 1984. Full-page images, as well as color embedded images are included. Through EBSCOhost.

Alternative Press Index
Indexes journals covering cultural, economic, political & social change. Highly recommended comprehensive guide to alternative sources of information. Coverage is international and interdisciplinary. Provides in-depth coverage in the humanities and social sciences. Indexes nearly 300 alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines. Includes selected abstracts from research journals. Coverage varies; some as early as 1991-present. Updated quarterly.

Art Abstracts
Citations and abstracts to reviews of art and foreign films. Also available in paper format. Films are indexed under "Motion Picture Reviews-Single Works." Before 1978, the heading is "Moving Picture Reviews."

Essay and General Literature Index
Cites essays and articles contained in collections of essays and other works published in the United States, Great Britain and Canada. More than 300 volumes and 20 annual or serial publications indexed annually. Includes full bibliographic information for the titles in which the collected works are found. Focuses on humanities and social sciences literature.

Film Review Index: 1882-1985
REFERENCE, 1st floor 791.43 F4875
A two volume comprehensive index of movie reviews between 1882 through 1985, films in the Film Review Index are listed in alphabetical order with cross references for title changes. The source contains film reviews, listing the periodical title, the date, volume and page on which the review can be found. Additonally, the source includes books and newspaper reviews.

Humanities Index
REFERENCE, 1st floor
Provides access to film reviews in selected English language journals from 1974 to the present. To find reviews from 1974 through 1983, look under the heading Moving Picture Reviews - Singleworks. To find reviews from 1984 to the present, look under the heading Motion Picture Reviews - Singleworks.

Index to Film Reviews in British and American Film Periodicals, together with: Index to Critical Reviews of Books About Film, 1930-1972
REFERENCE 791.430 B681i
Provides citations to reviews appearing in British and American film journals from 1939-1971. Includes documentary, experimental, short and educational domestic and foreign films as well as full- length feature films. Vols. 1 and 2 are arranged by film title with director and film reviewer indexes, while Vol. 3 is arranged by book title, with author, reviewer and subject indexes.

Index to Motion Pictures Reviewed by VARIETY, 1907-1980 REFERENCE lst floor 011.37 AL86I
Reviews from Variety reprinted in chronological order. The title of the film is followed by the month, day, year and page number in which the review appeared. Previous years of VARIETY film reviews (1969 - present) are available on microfilm in Periodical Services.

International Performing Arts Index
IIPA covers nearly all aspects of the world of performing arts, including film theater, and opera. Most IIPA records in the current file (1998 forward) contain an abstract. The film reviews have been selected from performing arts periodicals such as: American Cinematographer, Sight and Sound, Film Criticism, Films in Review, Variety, etc. For Southwestern community only.*

MLA International Bibliography
The Modern Language Association index of books, journal articles and dissertations is a particularly useful source for finding scholarly criticism of current and older films.

Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature
REFERENCE, 1st floor
The Readers' Guide is a subject and author index to general articles published in the popular press. The source also contains film reviews. From 1905 to 1977, citations for movie reviews were listed in alphabetical order under the subject heading Moving Picture Plays - Criticism, Plots etc. After 1977, the subject heading for movie reviews was changed to Motion Picture Reviews.

To find printed reference material relevant to your topic start with the library's Voyager catalog. Do a Reference Materials search using keywords to describe your topic. You can also check the library's Web pages for subject guides for specific topics to find other suggested sources.

Provides full-text reprints of important reviews of full-length films for each year. Films are reviewed in alphabetical order by title. The series began in 1982 and continues to the present.

International Dictionary Of Films and Filmmakers

This is a four volume set, with volume 1 covering films. It provides a synposis of North American, British and Western European Films. Extensive bibliographies for each film with references to reviews, criticism and journal articles and books are included.

Magill's Cinema Annual
REFERENCE, 1st floor 791.43 M272c
Includes full-text essay-reviews of three to five pages each of selected films. Each entry concludes with a bibliography that lists film reviews listed in other sources. This series began in 1982 and continues to the present.

Magill's Survey of Cinema: English Language Films, First Series

This source provides essays analyzing films from 1927-1980.

Magills' Survey of Cinema: English Language Films, Second Series

Covers additional films from 1928-1981 not covered in the first series.

Magill's Survey of Cinema: Silent Films

Includes essay-reviews of two to four pages each of movies reviewed from 1902-1936.

New York Times Film Reviews

Contains reprints of every film article published in the New York Times from 1913 to the present.

Selected Film Criticism

  • Volume One - Provides reviews on more than 100 films produced between 1896 and 1911.
  • Volume Two - Provides reviews on more than 200 films produced between 1912 and 1920.
  • Volume Three - Provides reviews on more than 200 films, produced between 1921 and 1930.
  • Volume Four - Provides reviews, reprinted in their entirety, from twelve periodicals of 150 of the most important American films between 1931-1940.
  • Volume Five - Provides reviews, reprinted in their entirety, of 140 of the most important American films between 1941 and 1950.
  • Volume Six - Provides reviews, reprinted in their entirety, of more than 160 foreign-produced films released in the United States between 1930 and 1950.
  • Volume Seven - The last volume in this series provides reviews of some 1,146 films released in the United States between 1896 and 1960.

WEB LINKS

DesertNet's Film Vault
This is a set of reviews from the Tucson Weekly newspaper which added links to various databases, picture files, etc. Search for a film or browse alphabetically through their film vault archive. Provides a synposis of the film and links to the reviews.Note: as of 2003, Film Vault is no longer publishing, but the existing content is still available.

Internet Movie Database
The granddaddy of the movie databases, it includes reviews, technical information, plot summaries, and cast and crediting listings for 140,000+ films. This site includes other features, such as local cinema schedules for major cities world-wide and Academy Award Information. The IMDB aims to "capture any and all information associated with movies from across the world, starting with the earliest cinema (1898), going through to the very latest releases and even movies still in production."

MRQE: The Movie Review Query Engine
The Movie Review Query Engine is a database of links to online reviews.

Roger Ebert on Movies
This site contains full-text reviews by Pulitzer prize winner Roger Ebert. The database contains reviews from 1985 to the present, and is searchable by movie titles, the names of actors, producers, directors, writers, and by dates.


Women's Studies Database Film Reviews
(University of Maryland) Feminist film reviews of both popular and little-known movies. A simple A-Z listing of film titles contains short and insightful reviews. Most of the reviews come from Linda Lopez McAlister's "The Women's Show," a Tampa, Florida radio program, and film scholar Cynthia Fuchs.
