The
Environmental Studies program at
Southwestern is highly interdisciplinary,
drawing faculty from religion, chemistry,
biology, economics, history, and
other areas of study. Consequently,
researchers will want to examine
a wide range of resources to find
information related to this discipline.
Listed below are a few selected indexes,
reference sources, and web links
that will lead users to information
both in the Smith Library Center
and on the Web.
Also visit the weblinks on
Southwestern University's Environmental
Studies Program homepage.
INDEXES
Biological
Abstracts
The Biological Abstracts database is a complete collection
of bibliographic references to life sciences journal
literature published around the world. Topics include
agriculture, agronomy, biochemistry, biotechnology,
environment, genetics, medicine, microbiology, and
pharmacology. Biological Abstracts indexes articles
from more than 4000 biological and medical research
journals. The database is updated quarterly, and
coverage begins with 1997.
BioOne
This database contains the full-text of more than
50 high-impact bioscience research journals, beginning
with the year 2000 for most titles. This database
is particularly strong in the areas of Environmental
and Ecological studies. Current issues are posted
as soon as they are published. Back issues are
permanently archived online.
Environment Index
Environment Index offers deep coverage in applicable areas of agriculture, ecosystem ecology, energy, natural resources, marine & freshwater science, geography, pollution & waste management, environmental technology, environmental law, public policy, social impacts, urban planning, and more.
GreenFILE
GreenFILE indexes scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health, and technology, GreenFILE serves as a resource for the environmental issues facing the planet. The database contains nearly 300,000 records, full text for selected titles and searchable cited references for more than 200 titles as well.
LexisNexis Academic
LexisNexis Academic provides full text and citation access
to information in the reference, business, medical, and legal
disciplines. The vast majority of the titles on LexisNexis
Academic are available in full text. The service covers newspapers,
magazines, wire services, federal and state court opinions,
federal and state statutes, federal regulations, and SEC filings
such as 10-K's, 10-Q's, and their exhibits. News information
is updated daily and wire services several times daily. Research
areas in LexisNexis Academic cover top news, general news
topics, and news transcripts; foreign language news sources;
company, industry, and market news; legal news; company financial
information; general medical and health topics and medical
abstracts; accounting, auditing, and tax information; law
reviews; federal case law; U.S. Code; and state legal research.
ScienceDirect
An online journal service with access to 200 or more peer-reviewed
scientific and social sciences journals, all published by
Academic Press. Beginning with the 1996 issues, users can
browse the complete table of contents for every volume and
issue, or search these seven specific fields: subject, abstract,
affiliation, author, date, keywords and article title. ScienceDirect
reproduces the full journal articles on screen as they appear
in the printed paper version. Requires Adobe Acrobat software.
Please note: there are indexing databases for most
disciplines. For example, environmental issues affecting women
could be found in the indexes listed in the library's Women's Studies guide, which
also has links to other womens' studies sites. Economic studies
relevant to environmental issues may be found at EconLit
(for Southwestern community only).
