This page is intended to introduce a few select resources, both on the Web and in the Smith Library Center print collection, that are particularly useful for the study of Education.

 


INDEXES

Childrens Literature Comprehensive Database (CLCD)
This database contains more than 150,000 critical reviews of children's books and adds new reviews for more than 1,500 books per month. These books range from the earliest baby board books to novels and nonfiction for young adults. Please note: click the Subscriber Login button.

EBSCO Animals
This extensive database provides students with thousands of easy-to-read entries about mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Each entry begins with a simple category breakdown of the animal including Kingdom, Class, Order, Genus & Species, and Geographical Locale as well as a detailed description. Many entries include colorful images

Education Abstracts
English-language periodicals and yearbooks published in the U.S. and elsewhere. Subjects include administration, teaching methods and curriculum, literacy, government funding, and more. Includes some full text.

ELibrary Curriculum
Designed specifically for K-12 schools and libraries. Students find the answers they need from more than 2,000 full-text magazines, newspapers, reference books, and transcripts-plus thousands of pictures, maps, educator-approved websites from Homework Central, plus audio/video content.

ERIC
National education database, indexing journal articles and reports in education.

Middle Search Plus
Provides full text for nearly 140 popular magazines for middle and jr. high school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990. Middle Search Plus also contains 84,011 biographies, 83,472 primary source documents, and an Image Collection of 192,999 photos, maps and flags. This database is updated daily on EBSCOhost.

Primary Search
Provides full text for nearly 70 popular, magazines for elementary school research. All full text articles included in the database are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles), and full text information dates as far back as 1990. This database is updated daily on EBSCOhost.

Searchasaurus
Searchasaurus is a colorful search interface for elementary and middle school students. Three EBSCO elementary and middle school databases (Primary Search, Middle Search?Plus and Book Collection: Nonfiction) can be accessed via Searchasaurus.


REFERENCE WORKS

To find printed reference material relevant to your topic start with the library's Voyager catalog. Do a Reference Materials search using keywords to describe your topic. You can also check the library's Web pages for subject guides for specific topics to find other suggested sources.

Multicultural megasite from the University of Southern California with extensive links and resources.

The Children's Literature Web Guide
Gathers together and categorizes a broad array of Internet resources related to books for children and young adults. The site is well organized, updated regularly and has its own search engine.

Columbia Education Center Website
Primarily designed for practicing and student teachers. Nicely organized starting point to find lesson plans and curricular materials. Also provides links to funding resources.

Discovery Education - School Resources
Home of the Lesson Plans Library. Includes other useful features for classroom use.

Ed.gov (Department of Education)
A fully searchable, comprehensive site from the U.S. Department of Education. Arranged into major categories such as Research & Statistics and Grants & Contracts. Very useful A to Z Index .

Education Report Card
This site provides reports that assess the educational system of each state in several categories, e.g., academic achievement, academic achievement of low-income and minority students, return on investment, rigor of standards, and postsecondary and workforce readiness.

EduHound: Everything for Education K-12
The site includes links to resources for most subjects taught in the K-12 curriculum and also provides links to community resources (e.g., museums), grants and funding, and professional sites for teachers (e.g., associations, publications, governmental agencies, and curriculum standards). Users can browse by subject categories, by lesson plans, or by "site sets," which are targeted resource collections on specific topics.

FREE: Federal resources for educational excellence
Incredibly content rich site of teaching and learning resources provided by more than 30 federal agencies.

GEM: Gateway to educational materials
Provides educators with quick and easy access to thousands of educational resources found on various federal, state, university, non-profit, and commercial Internet sites.

The Knowledge Loom
Review research, identify best practices, and participate in online events and discussions and discover supporting organizations and resources. A content rich site.

LD Online

Interactive guide to learning disabilities for parents, teachers and children.

National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
The essential place to go for extensive statistics on American education.

The National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities
NICHCY provides information on disabilities and disability-related issues for families, educators, and other professionals. Especially useful here is an extensive list of resources by state.

New York Times on the Web Learning Network
Provides access to lesson plans and news articles appropriate for use in the K-12 classroom.

PBS Teachers
Includes over 3,000 free lesson plans and activities.

Publication Outlets
The University of Colorado at Denver's School of Education Research Center has compiled this excellent list of academic and practitioner journals in the field of education. A useful tool for anyone seeking information about journals in which to publish.

School psychology resources online
Research learning disabilities, ADHD, functional behavioral assessment, autism, adolescence, parenting, psychological assessment, special education, mental retardation, mental health, and more.

SERI: Special education resources on the Internet
A site with very extensive listings created to make on-line Special Education resources easily and readily available in one location.

Smithsonian Education
Central education website of the Smithsonian Institution with lesson plans and other resources for educators.

TeachNet
Teachers Network is a nationwide, educational non-profit organization. The website offers lesson plans and other helpful resources. One section is devoted to information specifically For New Teachers.
