This page is intended to introduce a few select resources,
both on the Web and in the Smith Library Center print
collection, that are particularly useful for the
study of Communication.

Humanities
Abstracts
Periodicals in archaeology, art, classics, film,
folklore, journalism, linguistics, music, the performing
arts, philosophy, religion, world history, and world
literature. Includes some full text. For Southwestern community
only.*
Communication & Mass
Media Complete (CMMC)
CMMC incorporates CommSearch (formerly produced by
the National Communication Association) and Mass
Media Articles Index (formerly produced by Penn State)
along with numerous other journals to create a research
and reference resource of unprecedented scope and
depth in the communication and mass media fields.
CMMC offers cover-to-cover ("core") indexing
and abstracts for over 300 journals, and selected
("priority") coverage of over 100 more,
for a combined coverage of over 400 titles. Includes
full text for nearly 200 journals.
Social
Sciences Abstracts
International, English-language periodicals in sociology,
anthropology, geography, economics, political science,
and law. Some full text entries.
SocINDEX with Full Text
The world's most comprehensive and highest quality sociology
research database. The database features more than 1,660,000
records with subject headings from a 19,300 term sociological
thesaurus designed by subject experts and expert lexicographers.
SocINDEX with Full Text contains full text for 344 "core"
coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 129 "priority"
coverage journals. This database also includes full text for
more than 700 books and monographs, and full text for 6,800
conference papers.
REFERENCE
WORKS
In interdisciplinary fields such as
Communication, resources in many different
subject areas will be useful. To find
printed reference material relevant
to your topic start with the library's online
catalog. Do a Reference Materials search using keywords
to describe your topic. You can also check the library's
Web pages for subject guides for specific topics to find
other
suggested sources.

Ed. Ronald J. Maslon, Speech Communication Association,

Indexes articles in about 20 major communications
journals, some dating back to the 1920's. Indexing
by keyword and subject.
Women in Communication
Ed. Nancy Signorielli. Greenwood Pr. 1996.
In-depth biographical information about important
women in the communications field including scholars,
print and TV journalists, etc. Includes good bibliographies
and indexing.
International Encyclopedia of Communications
Oxford University Pr.,1989. 4 vols.
Good signed articles on a broad array of communications
topics. Includes good photos and bibliographies.

LINKS
Finding
data on the Internet: a journalist's
guide
A heavily used site which serves as an excellent
guide to the basic facts and statistics useful in
preparing a paper on a current issue. Also includes
dozens of links to various government and university-supported
sites for additional information.
Media
Link
Links to newspapers, magazines, television stations,
radio stations, film studios, news agencies, etc.,
all over the world. Great for local coverage of late
breaking news in places outside the U.S.
