Library Selection Links for SU Faculty
Below are links to sources for evaluative or purchasing information for faculty selecting materials for the library collection.
CHOICE Reviews Online
Off-campus log in to mySouthwestern and go to the Library tab
Turn off your browser's popup blocker when using
Always use the "GO" button (not the return key) when logging in
Faculty use Choice Reviews Online to get citations and reviews of books and digital resources. Creating an account in the Choice search interface allows faculty to email reviews to library liaisons, to save lists, to create individual interest profiles and to receive monthly emails with reviews of newly reviewed books or websites that fit selected criteria. Clicking on an ISBN will search the library holdings via Worldcat.org.
Choice, a publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries, offers reviews of 7,000 academic titles a year. Choice Reviews Online provides access to reviews published since 1988. The database is updated monthly.
RCLWeb
Off-campus log in to mySouthwestern and go to the Library tab
Turn off your browser's popup blocker when using
Faculty use RCL ("Resources for College Libraries") to get citations and sometimes reviews of books and digital resources. Creating an account in the RCLWeb search interface allows faculty to email reviews to library liaisons, to download records. Clicking on the "Search My Library" button in each record will search the library holdings via Voyager.
RCLweb is a highly selective core list limited to about 63,000 titles in all subjects. It includes both books (monographs, series, reference works, in some cases textbooks) and electronic resources (CD-ROM and subscription databases, web sites and other internet-based resources). About one-third of the listings include a Choice review. The database is updated quarterly.
YBP Academia
Online magazine and resource for academic librarians. Recommended subject lists, academic prize winners, current events lists, etc. Many lists download with Excel.
Collection Development & Acquisitions Staff Links
The Smith Library Center Acquisitions staff frequently use the vendors on this list, and most have websites faculty can search for new or out-of-print books, DVDs, CDs, Spanish, French, German, and Chinese materials, music scores, etc.
