Department News
The SLC's Gift Policy has been revised.
Effective in January 2010, increasingly crowded stack space requires that we accept gifts on a much more limited basis. Read our new policy here.
The SLC is piloting a shift in collection policy for DVD formats beginning in December 2009.
Our collection policy will still limit acquisitions to Region 1 (US format) DVDs whenever they are commercially available. When they are not available, the preferred approach will be to wait
to see if the title comes out in Region 1 format. But in cases where a professor needs a film soon for direct curriculum support, we will acquire non-Region 1 DVDs on a trial basis.
To minimize damage to university and individually owned computers on campus, the library's non-Region 1 DVDs will:
- be placed on permanent reserve at the circulation desk
- be available for in-library use only, where they will be playable on the region-free players in the SLC Media Library
- have a label that clearly states that ITS requests they not be played on any computer, as that may render that computer's DVD drive unusable for US-format DVDs
We will monitor the effects of the change before deciding whether it is practical to make it permanent. Comments and suggestions are welcome.
Department Overview
The Collection Development and Acquisitions Department coordinates the efforts of the liaisons (the librarian liaisons to academic departments and programs) and the faculty, who work together to build the library's print, media, and electronic collections. The department oversees the building of a balanced collection that is responsive to university needs.
Specifically, staff in this department order and receive print monographs and musical scores; standing orders; media; and most of the electronic resources for the library.
Collection evaluations to accompany academic departments' 10-year self-studies are also supported by this department.
All current members of the SU community may suggest new titles for the collection. The library's Collection Development Policy outlines what the library does and does not add to its collections.
We invite you to stop by the department during our open hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
