This page is intended to introduce a few select resources, both on the Web and in the Smith Library Center print collection, that are particularly useful for the study of Anthropology.
Primary Anthropology Databases
Academic Search Complete (via EBSCO)
A searchable database with citations and abstracts for journal articles covering all academic disciplines. Full text is available for more than half of the articles in this database. Subject areas: art and art history, general subjects, humanities, science and engineering, social. Great starting point for research.
Anthropological
Index Online (AIO)
Produced by the Royal Anthropological Institute, this citation database indexes the content in anthropology journals held in the British Museum (Museum of Mankind). The collection is worldwide, covers all branches of anthropology and contains citations from 1957 to the present. This source does not offer full text.
Annual Review of Anthropology, 1972-2002 (via JSTOR)
Covers topics and problems of current interest and recent publications in anthropology. Review articles are written by specialists. Library subscribes to the JSTOR database that includes this journal. Click directly on the journal year and then the specific issue to retrieve all records indexed for that issue. Current issues are not available in JSTOR but are located at call number 301 An78, 2nd floor of the A. Frank Smith Library.
OTHER SOCIAL SCIENCES DATABASES
Online version of the Hispanic American Periodicals Index, the principal index for over 400 key journals relating to Hispanics in the United States, Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean. Among the many subjects included are geography, archaeology, anthropology, ethnography, folklore, religion, art, literature, drama, and film. Indexes journals published throughout the Western world from 1970-present. Some full text included.
JSTOR (Journal Storage Project)
JSTOR is an online archive of academic journals in all fields. Articles generally become available here 3-5 years after publication. Users can browse the complete table of contents for every volume and issue, or search for words or phrases in the full text of the article, author and abstracts. JSTOR reproduces the full journal articles on screen as they appear in the printed paper version. Graphs, photographs, and other images are included.
SocINDEX with Full Text ( via EBSCO)
The world's most comprehensive and highest quality sociology research database. The database features more than 1,660,000 records with subject headings from a 19,300 term sociological thesaurus designed by subject experts. SocINDEX with full text contains full text for 344 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1895, and 129 "priority" coverage journals.
ARTstor
ARTstor has collections of high quality digital art images that can be used for noncommercial and scholarly, non-profit educational use. Images are international in scope and coverage includes a wide variety of civilizations, time-periods and media. The images are drawn from different sources, such as museums, archaeological teams, photo archives, slide collections, and art reference publishers. The site offers an online version of the thirteenth edition of the text, Enthnologue: Languages of the World. The contributors have endeavored to assemble a comprehensive list of global languages.

LANIC: Latin American Network Information Center: Anthropology and Archaeology
Developed and maintained from the University of Texas, this source links to Web sites on Latin American anthropology, both ancient and contemporary.
National Anthropological Archives/Human Studies Film Archives
Guides to historical and contemporary anthropological materials in a variety of formats, collected by the Department of Anthropology of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History, that document the world's cultures and the history of the discipline.

DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals (in Anthropology) - Covers free, full-text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals. Aims to cover all subjects (including psychology) and includes many foreign language titles.
IngentaConnect--The online index covers over 29,000 periodicals. Search by author name, or search by keywords in the titles of the articles and abstracts. No articles available online because we are not current subscribers to the service. Nevertheless, its value is the wide range of periodicals it covers. To determine if the Library has access electronically to a particular journal, browse the list of online journal titles, or search the Voyager Catalog to determine if the Library owns a print copy of the journal. If the journal title is not available in either print or electronic format, you can request a copy of the article through Interlibrary Loan.
