NOTE: This message pertains only to those seniors graduating in May.
SUMMARY: E-mail and Helios accounts to be deleted on June 1.
As an upcoming grad you have a lot going on in these next few weeks.
Many of you use e-mail as a primary means of communication with
friends, family, and prospective employers. You need to be aware that
all graduating seniors’ e-mail accounts and helios accounts will be automatically removed from the SU mail server on June 1.
So before you leave, follow these steps to save your mail and your helios files:
1. Create a non Southwestern email account such as yahoo mail account or a MSN Hotmail account
2. As an alum, you qualify for an “SU Alumni Email Forwarding Account”, which is a permanent you@alumni.southwestern.edu address which can be forwarded to whatever your real address is at any point in the future, example your hotmail or yahoo account. Make sure you have that set before creating your alumni account. Visit: alumni.southwestern.edu for more information and to sign up today!
3. We recommend after doing the above 2 steps; sign in to webmail.southwestern.edu and forward your SU e-mail to your new address you created in your non southwestern e-mail account.
4. Copy any files you have on your home directory on Helios. All new folders you have created, desktop files under the desktop folder, files in the documents folder. Please save to your local hard drive, flash drive, burn to a CD or a floppy drive. If you want to keep them please save them!
5. Copy your personal webpage if needed. Located on your home helios drive “public_html”.
6. Unsubscribe from your mailing lists.
How to notes and questions:
You can copy the e-mail messages or folders you want to keep through webmail using the download folder(s) option (see help file). However this saves to a mbox unix format and is difficult importing into another e-mail client. We suggest searching google for a solution. We recommend you forward your mail instead.
How to copy your address book, foward your mail and download your folders.
What happens if I leave and don’t copy my files and e-mail? Your mail and files are deleted effective June 1st and can not be retrieved so please follow the above steps to keep your files safe.
