Beware: E-mail Phishing Scams

Question ANY e-mail that asks for your password or requests a password change. No matter how legitimate it may look, even if it appears to be from ITS or the Help Desk. WE WILL NEVER ASK FOR YOUR PASSWORD. 

Remember, anyone who has your password can read and delete your e-mail and impersonate you. PROTECT YOUR PASSWORD AND YOUR IDENTITY!

Also, be wary of e-mails that appear to come from your bank, credit card company, phone service, etc.  Phishing scams can look very genuine.  If you receive any e-mail asking for personal information, do not respond.  Many times you can find clues that the e-mail is a fraud.

1. Do you detect poor grammar and choice of words in the message?
   
2. Does the return address or embedded link make sense? 
   

• When you roll-over a hot link in an e-mail the "full URL" displays in the lower left hand corner of the browser. 
  
• Does the full Internet path match the organization the e-mail is spoofing?  (i.e. http://www.imafraud.net may be displayed in the e-mail as Citi Bank Security)
