For Windows users, a personal firewall can be the difference between a healthy computer and one that’s not under your control. Now that residence halls are not inside the Southwestern firewall, it would be wise to install one of your own. Without a firewall anyone would be able to scan your computer, potentially endangering the network as well.

For the Windows operating system, a popular and free firewall is Zone Alarm.
Go there and look for the link marked ZoneAlarm (Free).

Though most programs will run fine under Windows XP, you might find an older program that will not run correctly under the new OS. If you have a lot of money tied up in older software, this can be quite a problem. Fortunately, Microsoft built a utility into Windows XP which provides compatibility with older software. Compatibility Mode is a utility that allows you to run the older program under the “shell” of the original OS it was designed for.
