Color & Specialized Printing
Pirate Print
Printing in the 24-hour Computer Lab, Olin 113 and 208, and the two Mood computer rooms are handled by Pirate Print. Each fall and spring semester, $30 “free” money is added to Pirate Print accounts. Fees deducted by Pirate Print are: $0.07 cents for B/W single-sided, $0.08 cents for B/W double-sided, $0.35 cents for color single-sided and $0.60 cents for color double-sided. Double-sided [duplex] printing is encouraged whenever possible.
Specialized Printing
Poster, photo and color printing is available in the the Instructional Media Center (IMC) located in ITS (Information Technology Services) offices - 2nd floor Prothro Center*.
The IMC is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am to noon and from 1:00pm to 5:00pm during the days the university is open. Reservations to use the equipment and software are not required but are highly recommended, especially if printing several large documents or for critical time needs. Posters require sign-up in advance and instructions for poster preparation and signup are on the bulletin board in the IMC.
Small posters can be printed on letter (8.5x11), legal (8.5x14), or ledger(11x17) size paper using the LaserJet 5500 color printer. • letter = $.25/sheet • legal = $0.35/sheet • ledger = $0.60
Larger posters are printed using the poster printer [DesignJet 500ps] on paper rolls of widths of 36 and 42 inches. • 36” coated = $2.50/square foot • 36” heavy and 42” = $3.00/square foot
• BYOP (Bring Your Own Paper), black/white and grayscale, and prints with less than 50% coverage area are one-half the price.
The mechanism to arrange for a time to print posters on the large format printer is done through the sign-up sheets that are located on the bulletin board in the IMC (Instructional Media Center). For each poster that you wish to print, sign up for a one hour slot - the sign-up sheet is divided into 30 minute blocks. If your prints will be 18” by 18” or smaller, you can probably print two in a hour unless they are very high resolution or on non-standard paper. The last available time slot to sign up to print a poster is 11:00am in the morning and 4:00pm in the afternoon and sign ups are on a first-come basis.
Poster Printing Guidelines
- You need to come prepared to print the poster - the time is for printing and not for creation, editing or changing.
-
The best document type for printing posters are PDF files.
-
The IMC stocks 36” and 42” rolls of medium to heavyweight plain white paper that does well for mounting (adhesive or dry) and for hanging. Any other paper types must be pre-approved by ITS and supplied by you prior to arranging for a time to print.
- If you are using any specialized fonts, include the fonts with your file.
- You can bring the file(s) on a flash drive, mail it to yourself, or retrieve from your network storage space (Helios).
- If you arrive 15 minutes past your scheduled time, you may not be able to print because that may impact the next person scheduled to print to the large-format printer.
- If you can arrive earlier than your scheduled time, please do so because you may be able to start earlier!
IMC Usage
-
The IMC area has other equipment so please bring only the people necessary to print. There maybe other people in the IMC doing their work.
- Treat the space as “library space” and keep non-project related and phone conversations to a minimum.
- If you cannot make your time slot, please stop by as soon as you can and remove your name from the sign-up sheet.
- Please remember to bring your account number with you if your department will be paying for the cost of printing the poster. Otherwise, please bring cash or a check - we cannot take Pirate Cards or credit cards.
* ITS and the IMC are located on the 2nd floor of the Protho Center. As you enter the Prothro Center from the Mall entrance, head to the back left to the stairs and elevator. At the top of the stairs on the second floor, turn right and you will see the entrance to ITS. From the elevator, take a left and you are at ITS.
