How to Access Your File Storage [Helios] from Off-Campus or From the Residence Halls

A very easy way to access your files stored on Helios from off-campus or from the residence halls is to use a file transfer protocol called FTP . There are several programs available to do this. One that is easy to install, use and is available on both Mac and Windows is FileZilla - http ://filezilla-project.org/

Download and install FileZilla, http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
  1. Open FileZilla for Windows
  2. Fill in the following in the QuickConnect bar at the top:
    • Address: ftp.southwestern.edu
    • User: (your username)
    • Password: (your password)
    • Port : (leave blank)
  3. Once connected, you can choose the folder you want to view or edit. The public_html folder on the remote system, for instance, contains files for your personal website, if you have one.
  4. Locate the folder or files you want to transfer by changing the directory path on the local system side of the window. For example, if the files you want to transfer are located on the desktop of the local machine, you will navigate to c:/Document and Settings/SUeID /Desktop where SUeID is either your Southwestern account name (SUeID) or user.
  5. Drag the file(s) or folder(s) you want to copy to/from Helios.
