A. Frank Smith, Jr. Library Center Gift Acceptance Policy

Southwestern University gratefully accepts gift books and other materials. We must, however, accept these gifts conditionally, as follows:

  1. Gift books will be evaluated after their acceptance to determine their appropriateness for our collection. Any which are deemed inappropriate for this particular library (duplicate, dated subject matter, etc.) may, at our discretion, be passed on to a more suitable location or sold in the library’s ongoing book sale.
  2. Books added to our collection will become subject to library policies and regulations, and will be integrated with existing holdings, normally according to subject matter.
  3. If you need a statement of value of your gift for tax purposes, please obtain this before your gift is received by the University. As an interested party, Southwestern cannot provide an appraisal for you. We will be glad to provide the names of professional appraisers and/or used-book dealers who can assign a dollar value to your gift.
When we add gift books to our collection a gift plate will be placed in each book giving the name of the donor, and when requested, the name of the person(s) in whose honor or memory the gift is made.
