What is Paideia?:Paideia is a distinctive and holistic program at Southwestern University emphasizing intellectual curiosity and civic engagement. It challenges many of Southwestern’s most sharply curious and civic-minded students to affect the communities to which they belong by integrating the knowledge and skills gained through interdisciplinary studies in and outside of the classroom. |
||
The History:In 2002, The Robert & Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust announced an $8.5M grant to Southwestern. The grant was issued in the form of a two-part Challenge, which required Southwestern to raise the resources necessary to launch and sustain the Paideia Program and to construct its home. |

The Challenges & Progress to Date:
Paideia Endowment To endow the Paideia program, Southwestern was challenged to raise $6M by September 30, 2010. Once completed, The Robert & Ruby Priddy Charitable Trust will make a matching gift of $3M to reach the $9M goal. Southwestern has received $3M in gifts and pledges to the Paideia program endowment, which leaves $3M to raise by September 30, 2010 towards the university’s portion of the $9M goal.
Prothro Center for Lifelong Learning To construct a home for Paideia, Southwestern was challenged to raise $9M by September 30, 2010. To date, Southwestern has received $10,801,550, securing a matching gift of $2M from The Priddy Charitable Trust and surpassing the $11M goal. Thanks to the generosity of many, most notably the Prothro Family of Wichita Falls, TX, Southwestern began construction on the Charles & Elizabeth Prothro Center for Lifelong Learning in the spring of 2008. The building, which will house the Paideia program, consolidate vital student services and provide additional classrooms and conference rooms, is scheduled to be dedicated on March 11, 2010. |
