WHY WOULD I WANT TO BE ASSIGNED TO A LIVING-LEARNING COMMUNITY (LLC)?

LLCs are designed to increase opportunities for you to more easily connect your in-class and out-of-class experiences by fostering an element of intellectual curiosity within the residence hall. You can think of it as extending your First-Year Seminar beyond the walls of the typical classroom. Faculty teaching in the FYS Living-Learning Communities use the residence hall environment as a forum for activities such as movies, debates, class meetings and social gatherings.

HOW WILL MY FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR EXPERIENCE BE DIFFERENT IF IT'S DESIGNATED A LIVING-LEARNING COMMUNITY?

Although there is an expectation of an intellectual commitment from each student, the LLC First-Year Seminars won't be harder or easier. The difference lies mainly in the kinds of conversations and activities that will happen because you and your classmates will be sharing space together. You may even find yourself staying up into the wee hours of the morning to talk about an FYS lecture or assignment with your suitemates. Group projects take on a whole new meaning. The difference is in large part up to you!

WHERE WILL I LIVE IF I'M IN AN LLC?

Eleven LLCs will be in Mabee Hall and two will be on the first floor of Brown-Cody Hall. This fall will be the fourth year for LLCs in Mabee Hall and its unique structure has made it perfect for this arrangement. Groups of suites are clustered together to form coed "pods" of 12, 14 or 16 students. Each LLC pod will include one FYS. This fall will be the second year for LLCs in Brown-Cody Hall where students live within single gender suites, but on a coed floor with their FYS classmates. Both Mabee Hall and Brown-Cody Hall have large open areas, perfect gathering spots for groups. If you choose an LLC, you will live in either Mabee Hall or Brown-Cody Hall for your entire first year. You can learn more about all of Southwestern's residence halls, including these two halls here.

I ALREADY SIGNED UP FOR HOUSING, BUT I WANT TO BE IN AN LLC. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Nothing! Your LLC choice supersedes your previous housing preference. We're on it!

WHAT WILL MY LIFE BE LIKE IF I DON'T PARTICIPATE IN AN LLC?

For starters, you'll have a great First-Year Seminar, filled with other great students (slightly more than half of the first-year class will not be in an LLC). The main difference will be in your living situation. If you're not in an LLC, you will live in one of the other first-year halls: Brown-Cody Hall (second and third floors) or Kurth Hall for women; Ruter Hall for men.
