AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR PROGRAM
Southwestern University's First-Year Seminar Program (FYS) introduces new students to college, while exposing them to what it means to live and learn
in a liberal arts and sciences environment. The FYS Program begins during
Orientation Week in August and is required of all first-year students. The 26
First-Year Seminars include a variety of topics and should appeal to a wide
range of interests. Fall 2008 FYS summaries are available here.
- Please note: since our brochure went to press, we added one FYS section. Travel, Tourism and Encountering "the Other" will be offered this fall in addition to those described in the brochure. A description of this Seminar may be found here.
There are two kinds of First-Year Seminars: those that have been designated
Living-Learning Communities (noted as LLC next to the Seminar title) and
those that have not. If you are interested in the Living-Learning Communities
option, which is available to about 46 percent of the first-year class, you will
select five seminars from that group in addition to five regular seminars. You
may learn more about Living-Learning Communities here.
By May 15, you should indicate your seminar choices by completing the enrollment form. Although every effort will be made to place you in one of your seminar
choices, you may be placed in any seminar. Seminar assignments, once made, will not be changed.
Notification of FYS assignments will be mailed in mid-June with further information about your
seminar.
