INTRODUCTION
The 2007-08 Southwestern University Faculty Handbook is provided in Adobe Portable Document Format (pdf) & requires the FREE Adobe Reader to view. Please read the following before using this document.
The Faculty Handbook is intended to describe general University policies, especially those which affect the teaching staff. It may be useful also as a general reference book for all members of the University community. Other important sources of information are the University Catalog, the Student Handbook, and the Staff Handbook. Clarification or additional data may be obtained from the administrative officer in charge of the area in question.
University policy incorporated in the Faculty Handbook derives from five sources: (1) the Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws; (2) enactments by the Board of Trustees; (3) faculty legislation; (4) administrative directives; and (5) general procedure based on precedent. In the case of the latter three sources, presidential confirmation is required for the policy in question to be considered University policy.
Many of the provisions in the Faculty Handbook have been modeled on statements and interpretations suggested by professional organizations related to the field of higher education. Nevertheless, the University recognizes only those portions of such statements and interpretations as operative policy and procedure of itself which appear in the Bylaws or have been specifically adopted by the Board of Trustees. Certain elements of the Faculty Handbook are derived from official resolutions voted on and approved by the Board of Trustees, and appear as appendices in the Handbook. If a conflict in interpretation exists between the appendix and the textual reporting of the information in the body of the Handbook, the appendix remains the official statement of policy of the University.
