Religion
Southwestern’s Religion program introduces students to a variety of global religious traditions, experiences and expressions, and invites an empathetic understanding of difference. Our program focuses on providing students with tools to critically engage with various “religious texts,” whether they are written, oral, performed, or symbolic.
Religion courses immerse students in the comparative study of themes and dimensions such as the beliefs, practices, rituals and myths that exist within and between various religious traditions. The program blends interdisciplinary engagement with the study of religion and other human endeavors by encouraging students to learn and use a variety of methodologies, ranging from textual to social-scientific to historical to feminist and post-colonial.
A Religion major prepares you well for graduate work in a number of liberal arts fields (in addition to religion) and, for those seeking to pursue two majors, it is also an excellent complementary major to the range of liberal arts majors available at Southwestern. In addition, a Religion major is good for those seeking to pursue an education in the seminary, though a number of other liberal arts majors serve this goal as well.
