Teaching Philosophy
In all of my courses, I strive to challenge students to become critically engaged scholars who have an appreciation for quantitative and qualitative methods, sociological theory, and the sociological imagination. I've also shared research experiences with a number of Southwestern students outside of the classroom, including Melissa Garcia ('12) and Griffin Ferry ('12) (see 2013 forthcoming article), Victoria Dominguez ('11), William Molidor ('12) and Andrew Cantu ('13), and most recently Bree Billingsley ('14), and Nathan Tuttle ('14). The fruits of our labor have been well received at professional conferences and are currently at various stages in the review process. These activities reflect my belief that teaching and learning are ongoing and should extend beyond the walls of the classroom.
Previous Courses
Social Problems; Sociological Theory; Sociology of Work; Criminology; Globalization; Vicente Villa Summer Scholars Program (Southwestern), Young Scholars Program (Ohio State) *Also while pursuing first degree: Introduction to Psychology; Social Psychology; Clinical Psychology
Research
My primary research centers on race, gender, and age stratification. Specifically, I use a mixed methods approach to explain the patterns and processes of contemporary discrimination. I am interested in how these processes manifest in occupational, educational, and criminological contexts.
