Engaging Minds, Transforming Lives

American Studies

American Studies is an interdisciplinary major, which focuses on the complex interplay of the diverse cultures of North America, both past and present. At Southwestern, the Program incorporates the study of economics, history, literature, art, theater, political science, sociology and a number of other fields, in pursuit of a deeper understanding of the unique underpinnings, challenges and achievements of American society and culture.

Our curriculum exposes students to different content areas and time periods, as well as discipline-specific methodologies. Working closely with their Adviser/Program Chair, students integrate their knowledge and learning approach in pursuit of an interdisciplinary method of critical inquiry that is focused on examining the diverse cultures, groups, and experiences that make up American society, both as discrete segments and a complex whole.
