To take advantage of this, Southwestern offers a variety of equipment and programs at nominal fees for students to get away. Southwestern's Central Texas location offers a two-fold benefit: almost year-round warm weather for getting outdoors and access to the state's best parks, rivers, and lakes, Gulf of Mexico beaches, and Hill Country trails and climbing spots.

Fortune Magazine has named Austin among the country's five "intellectual capitals," according to an Austin Chamber of Commerce publication. Fortune took into account the seven institutions of higher education which sit in the greater Austin area, of which Southwestern is a part.
