Internship Development: What would you say was the best part of your internship?
K.T.: “My favorite part of my internship at CosmoGIRL! was building relationships with the other interns, as well as my boss and the fashion editors at the magazine. It was through those relationships that most of my learning took place.”

ID: What parts of your internship were most rewarding?
K.T.: “Once I had been interning for a while and had proven myself, I was given more responsibilities within the department. Gaining this respect really meant a lot to me, and made all the mundane, busy work, worthwhile.”

I.D. Is there one event that you will remember forever?
K.T.: “The editor-in-chief of CG! personally asked all of the fashion interns if we wanted to sit in on a departmental meeting, because she thought that we were doing a great job. It really meant a lot to me, that the editor-in-chief would even take the time to pay notice to the interns. If I ever work my way into a position of such high rank, I hope to be the kind of leader that she has become.”

I.D.: Any funny anecdotes from your internship?
K.T.: “One time when our boss was out of the office on a photo-shoot, we found ourselves slightly restless towards the end of the day, with not much to do. To entertain ourselves and pass the time, we decided to dress up in some of the ridiculous accessories and take pictures of each other. Usually our days were filled with work from the time we arrived to the time we left, so getting to goof around and bond that day was a lot of fun.”

I.D. What advice would you give another student interested in doing an internship?
K.T.: “Internships never turn out how you expect them to… sometimes for the worse, sometimes for the better. Nevertheless, keep an open mind and a positive attitude about your work, and you’ll inevitably benefit from the experience, no matter what.”

I.D.: Why do you feel students should get involved in internships?
K.T.: “If there’s anything I’ve learned from my internships in the fashion magazine industry, making good contacts is the number one secret to success. The more people you can meet within your potential field of work, the easier it will be to learn about future job opportunities, promotions, etc. Internships also serve as an indicator of what working in the industry will be like. You never know how you’ll feel about a career choice until you actually experience it for yourself. An internship is a great way to introduce you to a career, without having to commit yourself to it just yet.”

I.D.: What did you learn about yourself through the internship?
K.T.: “This internship confirmed my post-graduation plans. I now know for sure that I want to move to New York City and pursue a career in the fashion magazine industry.”

I.D. Do you feel that internships are a valuable part of the curriculum? Why or why not?
K.T.: “I feel that internships are the MOST valuable part of the curriculum. Even the editors who I’ve talked to, have said that participating in multiple internships before graduating from college really sets you apart from the majority of other recent grads applying for the same positions. Good grades in school can only get you so far. When applying for a job after college, you should be able to prove to your employer that your good grades have already successfully translated into the real world, in multiple situations.”

I.D.: You are stranded on a desert island with only one book, one CD and one DVD- what are they?
K.T. “Any Augusten Burroughs book; In Between Dreams, Jack Johnson; and any Audrey Hepburn movie.”

I.D. If you could eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you pick?
K.T.: “Breakfast tacos!”

I.D.: How has this internship shaped your future?
K.T.: “I finally know what I want to do with my life, and it’s so exciting! For the first time, I can actually see what my future (career-wise) will look like, and not only is it relieving, but it is also extremely gratifying to know that my education has led me into a direction that I would have never imagined, and that I would have never found to be so exciting.”

When Terrenee Knight ‘07 began her internship with Ciao! Talent Agency she started as any other intern, doing behind the scenes work and learning as much as she could about the company.  Little did she know her role within the organization would change dramatically.

As a part of her internship experience, Terrenee was  encouraged to go through the audition process in order to better understand what the actors experienced and the casting directors looked for.    Auditions came open for the hit television show “Friday Night Lights” that filmed in Austin, Texas.  After her audition, she was cast for a Guest Starring role as Rosario.

Terrenee is proof that you never know where your internship will lead you.  If you go in with a strong work ethic and open mind you just may have experiences and opportunities that you never dreamed of!
