What One May Expect The Program is designed to be completed within four years covering a minimum of seven semesters. First-Year students begin as provisional students during their first semester. During this time students begin their studies with Human Anatomy, Athletic Taping Techniques, Introduction to Athletic Training, in addition to learning medical terminology and medical note writing. The clinical education component requires students to observe a minimum 75 hours in different Athletic Training settings. These settings include: Southwestern's Athletic Training Room, working with an Athletic Trainer in a practice or game setting, high school athletic training room, physical therapy or sports medicine clinic, orthopedic medical center, surgical observations, and hospital emergency room. Once admitted into the ATEP during the spring semester of the first year, students progress through six semsters of academic coursework that has been designed to build on each other leading to a capstone experience and research. During these six semesters students are also required to participate in well-structured clinical education components which include: one-on-one learning with different faculty members, assisting in the Athletic Training Room, working with athletic teams, traveling with athletic teams, observing physicians in many different settings, and assisting other Athletic Trainers in different settings. At the completion of the program the students will have successfully completed 1000 hours of clinical experience. The SU athletic training student concludes his or her education with the capstone experience designed to culminate the learning process. |
