General Information

The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) has accredited the Southwestern University Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) since April of 2000.  Southwestern University offers a unique program within the breath of a liberal arts education. At Southwestern, we believe that an individual program should be viewed against the background of the fundamental concepts of the institution. In a liberal arts university, the major is accomplished within the context of a broad based education and diverse experiences.

The program has not only been designed to meet the accreditation standards but to equip students with the resources to help meet the challenging needs of the vastly growing profession of athletic training. One of the program's goals is to challenge our students early with the academics helping them to gain a greater understanding of what they need to absorb from their clinical education and experiences. This program is housed in the Kinesiology Department, which provides the student a greater opportunity to challenge themselves in exercise physiology and biomechanics. The introduction of research methodology is presented early and intergrated into the coursework leading to a culminating research project. This project is a collaborate effort with a faculty member. The program concludes with each student presenting their research and participating in a capstone experience designed to culminate their education. The capstone usually occurs off-campus, but is designed by each individual and his or her advisor to best fit the needs of the student. Past capstone experiences have included working with the high school setting, clinical outreach programs, professional sports, and sports medicine clinics.
